It’s the Friday before Memorial Day weekend and I am amazed at how long I have been blogging weekly and how close my husband is to graduating. The time has passed so quickly and yet, we’re only about halfway through the whole year. Like the beginning of the year, I feel like the half of the year is a good time to reflect on what I would like to do in this blog and how to adjust it to more of what I strive to do with my writing. So here’s my news.
I need a break from blogging.
Suggestions from my closest friends and family, as well as prayer and meditation, made me realize I need to change this blog. For now until the first week of September, I am going to stop writing Five Minute Fridays and reevaluate where I want to go with my blogging. I promise to do a monthly newsletter of updates for you at the end of each month, so look for that as I try to discover how God wants me to write this blog.
I’m reading books more than ever.
Do you have Goodreads? If so, you can become my friend and we can share book recommendations together. I have been using Goodreads to discover great new books, especially books in my genre, Christian fantasy. I also think of it as a great tool to meet my potential readers and share my love of books. That’s why I wanted to write in the first place-I loved books and I wanted to write ones better or at the same level as the ones I read.
Editing my book has taken a new turn.
When I started editing my book, I thought I was nearing completion and publication. I have swiftly discovered that is not the case. I realized quickly that I would need time to finish (another reason to take the summer off) and that publishing wouldn’t happen within my designated time table (July/Aug). Apparently, this is normal for writers to experience and part of the reason publishing traditionally takes longer than self-publishing. They go through a lot of drafts in their stories before it ever goes to print.
Received feedback from the short story competition about my story, “Be Strong and Courageous.”
If you haven’t read my short story yet, here it is. I was nervous and anxious when I saw that the feedback I paid for in the competition had arrived in my inbox. Taking a gulp, I pressed the open button and tried to steady my heartbeat. To my utter shock, I found the comments both complementary and understandable (using dialogue tags is a debated topic among writers). I had been feeling discouraged about my fiction writing, so reading this gave me the fuel I needed to continue. Plus, I now have another idea to write about if I need a break from editing.
God provided for my husband and I during a lean month.
My husband and I rely on his school grants for income each month. However, he will be graduating in June and that means we will no longer receive additional income from his school. He also will have to look for a job, which will take time. Adding to this is the fact that I will not be receiving extra income in June because of the way my pay period works. I was concerned about this fact at first, but God quickly provided. He gave me three housesitting jobs to make the extra income for the month. His provision is a reminder that even during July, when we don’t have that money at all, he will provide.
I’m not sure what this summer will bring for me, but I hope that God will enlighten me with what he wants me to do with this blog. I know that he will show me how to use my writing for his glory and to fulfill his command at the end of Matthew.
“ Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”-Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)
